Fairytales really do come true. This wedding was the kind that little girls dream of, from being the beautiful princess bride in an amazing dress, to the princely groom waiting at the end of a long walk to take her hand. From start to finish, it was a production that could only end with “happily ever after.”
The bride was Sarah Dionne Jakes (19), daughter of world-renowned ministers Bishop T.D. and Serita Jakes. The groom was Robert Leandro Henson (22), son of Samantha Henson. On June 21, 2008, the young couple was married by another Bishop of note, Noel Jones.
Sarah, a journalism major at the University of Phoenix, and Brian, a criminal-justice major and senior linebacker at TCU, had their chocolate- and blue-colored wedding at The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas (the Jakes’ church). It was planned by Millicent Finney. The bride’s dress was designed by the international award-winning designer Madeline Gardiner, of New York. A strapless, satin dress twinkled with hand-stiched Swarovski crystals, and featured intricate beading and a corset with a back tie. Layers of tulle circled the ball gown skirt, and were embellished with these beautiful scattered beads and crystals. The big finish was a detachable cathedral train that continued the bead-and-crystal design theme.
The Cinderella theme was co-ordinated with dim lighting inside the church, to create an elegant and romantic feel. White roses, accented with a touch of light-blue flowers, decorated the stage in an arch form with crystals dangling. After the ceremony, the reception at the Jakes’ estate featured an enchanted forest (complete with fog), an ice sculpture of a glass slipper, and a string quartet. The newlyweds arrived for their party in a horse-drawn carriage.
The lavish event was attended by numerous celebrities, including Tyler Perry, Kelly Price, Cathy Hughes, Emmitt Smith, Tom Joyner, and Donna Richardson, Deion and Pilar Sanders, Dr. Phil McGraw, Paula White, and Michael Irvin.
The young couple honeymooned in Hawaii.
